CFIG Precision Agriculture Research

Optimising fertilizer and seed rates according to production zone.

Ivan and Helen Lee

Rotation : Wheat 00 / Canola 01/ Wheat 02

Paddock Standard fertilizer: 100kg Agrich + 90 Urea

Treatments:

Treatment Agrich Phosphate rate Nitrogen Supply
Paddock seed rate (70kg) 100 11.4 12
Low seed rate (40kg) 100 11.4 12
Low 35 kg 4 4.2
Medium 70 kg 8 8.4
High 140 kg 16 16.8

The first to treatments of the trial investigate the theory that wheat crops grown on deep week sands perform better if sown with a low seed rate.

The remaining treatments investigate the responsiveness of wheat to N, P and K on each productivity zone.

Nitrogen and Potassium treatments
The soil tests indicated that some sites in the paddock were marginal for potassium (site D,E,G,H)

The nitrogen rates have been determined assuming the following estimated yields in each zone.

Production Zone Assumed yield T/Ha N applied at seeding Units of nitrogen Kg Urea to apply Potassium rates
Low 1.5 T 4.2kg 20 30 0
Medium 2-2.5 T 8.4kg 50 90 50
High 3-4 T 17kg 80 136 100

Measurement of response.
The trial paddock will be flown over by Air Agronomics (2M resolution) to give indication of biomass response to phosphate, nitrogen and potash.

Plots will be harvested according to production zone with a weight trailer at harvest and utilising yield mapping technology.
