CFIG Precision Agriculture Research

Investigating if optimising fertilizer rates according to production zone increases profitability of whole paddock.

Greg and Raylene Evans

Rotation Pasture 01 / Canola 02 / Wheat 03
2002 crop and Variety Surpass 501 Canola
Paddock Standard fertilizer 100kg Agstar Extra + Flexi N pre and post seeding supplying 46kg/Ha N
Weed control A) Pre emergent : 2L Atrazine
  B) Post emergent : 2L Atrazine and Grass selective.

Treatments:
Treatment AgStar Rate Phosphate rate Nitrogen Rate
Low 30 kg 4 4.5
Medium 60 kg 8 9
High 120 kg 16 18

Nitrogen and Potassium

Treatments of N and K are to be applied post seeding.

The nitrogen rates have been determined assuming the following estimated Canola yields in each zone.

Production Zone Assumed yield T/Ha Units of nitrogen Kg Urea to apply Potassium (MOP kg/Ha)
Low 0.6T 4.5 0 0
Medium 1T 35 60 0
High 2T 75 120 70

Potassium

The potassium is low for wheat (marginal for canola) at sites C, E, F.

K will definitely be needed in these areas for the wheat following the canola.

Measurement of response.

The trial paddock will be flown over by Air Agronomics (2M resolution) to give indication of biomass response to nitrogen rates.

Plots will be harvested according to production zone with a weight trailor at harvest.
