CFIG Precision Agriculture Research

Evaluating wide row spacings of lupins across productivity zones.

Wes and Meg Baker

Introduction: There has been recent trial work indicating that sowing lupins on wider row spacings doesn\'t have any yield penalty.
We are concerned that many of these measurements have been made on ideal lupin soils and may not reflect the reality of many Western Australian paddocks made up of a mix of soils.

This trial investigates the performance of lupins on a range of row spacings across four productivity zones.

Paddock 11
Rotation Lupins/Wheat/Lupins/Wheat/ Canola/Wheat
2002 crop Belara Lupins sown at 90kg
Paddock Standard fertilizer 70kg Summit Pasture (12.8kg P)
Weed control A) Pre-emergent : 2L simazine + 500ml Atrazine
B) Post-emergent : 80ml Brodal+5g Eclipse 200ml Targa +n 350ml sertin.

Trial Description
Treatments:
Narrow 230mm (9 inch)
Wide 460mm (18 inch)
Very wide 920mm (36 inch)

The plots have been sown the full length of the paddock in an East - West orientation.

Each plot will cover a high/Medium and Low production zone.
During the season crop establishment, biomass production (estimation of N fixation), pod height and yield will be monitored.
